Buying a Car in Thailand
Congratulations, you’ve decided that you’re brave enough to drive in Thailand. Now I’ll run through what you can expect when you own a car in Thai.
In the video I’ll outline everything from the initial Purchase, all the way through to scheduled servicing and the basics of filling up at the pump.
Buying a car in Thailand is considerably more expensive than you might think, not everything is cheaper in The Land of Smiles. Many things are more expensive here.
You will need the following paperwork, with signed copies, to register a new car or transfer ownership of a used car:
Your current passport
Your nonimmigrant visa
Your work permit or a letter of residence issued by your Embassy. (When I got my Thai drivers license, getting the Australian Embassy to “verify” my address was the most expensive part of the whole process. And by verify, I mean they had me fill out a Statutory Declaration and the girl at the counter just stamped it. They didn’t keep a copy, they didn’t enter my details into a database, essentially I just paid for a bad photocopy of a Stat Dec and a stamp).
The seller will need the following documents with signed copies:
Their current passport
Their nonimmigrant visa
Their work permit or a letter of residence issued by your Embassy.
Their household registration document or if they are a Thai resident
The cars blue book or a copy of the blue book if the car has been bought under finance. Remember, always check if the seller is up to date with his payments.
The Tax Sticker or registration needs to be current.
The DLT will check the engine and chassis serial number of the car to make sure that it isn’t stolen.
Please be aware that Thais can be quite happy to sell their cars while they are still under finance. Generally they will ask for a smaller lump sum from you as payment and then you take over making the repayments on the loan. I have no direct experience of this process.
If your car is over 7 years old, it will need to pass an annual roadworthy test. The test will include an emissions test and will review the functionality of lights, indicators, brakes, steering, tyres and bodywork.
A shop displaying this symbol can perform the test.
The following article by the Bangkok Post clearly outlines the coverage of the all the different levels of insurance for your vehicle.
